DIMENSIONEN EINES NEUEN ENTWERFENS
von Textstrukturen zu Raumstrukturen
Diplomausstellung
Universität Mozarteum Salzburg
2025
context:
The aim of this thesis was to develop a stage space not, as is often the case,
based on the content of a text, but purely on its structural composition. This approach began
with the analysis and identification of formal textual structures, which were first
translated into graphic systems and later into spatial ones. Different structural elements were
assigned to specific symbols, the frequency and weighting of which in the text determined, via the
proportion and position of the symbols, the composition of the three-dimensional
sculpture. The process of assigning structures to symbols was, in a
further step, partially automated through the use of coding, so that three-dimensional
designs could be systematically generated and transformed. In addition, the
sculptural visualisations were translated into the auditory realm. The visual designs were
expanded into a participatory sound installation.
As part of the diploma project, experiments were conducted with fellow students
who, based on a text example, examined the difference between content-based and
structure-based design approaches, and reflected on the reasoning behind the respective
designs. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, design concepts
from scenography, computer science and composition were combined, generating new formats of design.
